Véronique Duplain est une photographe vivant et travaillant à Montréal. Autodidacte, elle a exploré différentes sphères de la photographie avant de se consacrer au travail de composition avec le Selfie Project, sur lequel elle travaille depuis maintenant dix ans. Dans le cadre de ce projet, l’artiste se met en scène dans des univers narratifs pendant tout le mois de février et prend une photo par jour. Ces photographies quotidiennes, exposées côte-à-côte, forment en quelque sorte un journal intime visuel témoignant de l’évolution personnelle de Duplain en tant qu’artiste. Ces autoportraits proposent toutefois plus qu’une simple entrée vers l’univers personnel de l’artiste: ils peuvent être lus, notamment, sous la perspective de la critique sociale. Publiées quotidiennement sur la plateforme Instagram, ces photographies abordent les thèmes actuels du voyeurisme web et de la construction médiatique de personnalités publiques. La pratique artistique de Duplain dénote l’importance accordée au travail manuel et à la manipulation artisanale et ce, malgré les possibilités du numérique, par la mise en place des éléments constituant chacune des photographies. L’artiste, en modifiant physiquement un espace qui semble réalisé par montage numérique et en incarnant des personnages fictifs, se joue des frontières entre le réel et l’illusoire.

Véronique Duplain is a Montreal-based photographer. Self-thaught, she has explored different spheres of photography before devoting herself to composition work with the Selfie Project, on which she has been working for ten consecutive years. In the context of this project, the artist stages herself as the main subject of different narrative universes each day, for the entire month of February. These daily pictures, exhibited next to one another, form visual diary witnessing Duplain’s personal evolution as an artist. These self-portraits offer more than a simple entry to the artist’s personal universe : they can be read, notably, under the perspective of social criticism. Published daily on Instagram, these photographies address the very actual themes of internet voyeurism and of the media construction of public personalities. Duplain, despite the possibilities offered by the digital, accords importance to manual work and craft manipulation in her artistic practice by setting up physically each element composing the photographies. The artist, by corporeally modifying a space that seems realized by digital montage and by embodying a fictive character, plays with the boundaries of the real and the illusory.
